Four weeks in a row (okay, I was late for a couple of days because it's been a busy week, but nobody noticed until I said it just now and LOOK A LIGER. You didn't fall for that did you? Dang. I'm sure someone out there is reading this in the jungle though, and I totally just saved him from being eaten by a liger, which is the most karmic way to start the weekend).

Oh man, three weeks in a row.
Soon the ancient gypsy curse will strike though, and there will be no more sketches. Also my fingers will turn into tiny spatulas, but that's not the scary part (you can macgyver a lot with ten tiny spatulas at your disposal).

Mummy and ghost belayer. Probably not very efficient at belaying. Might be why they're both undead (or maybe the mummy is just a regular dude that keeps getting scratched on the wall, that's also a perfectly valid explanation).

They are. Bloody hands too. Regular hands are the opposite of fun times though.
Probably should have planned the background better, but there's always point where I get sick of looking at tiny hands, and I reached it before I could do something interesting with the background.

The image is pretty big, but I probably need to work zoomed in more. That texturey effect is actually just my brush because I work zoomed out all the time, and when zoomed in, it looks like van gogh gone horribly wrong. Although the man did cut off his own ear, so I'm not sure how much wronger you can go.

It is thorsday.
That means vikings.
These are not vikings, but they are burly dudes with no shirts on and ugly faces, which is already way more viking than most things. Except those cast iron little black teapots. For some inexplicable reason, those exude a powerful air of vikingness. I was pouring my tea this morning and I could hear the distant echo of a thousand nordic men shouting in unison and the clang of steel on steel.
Although that might just have been the neighbor waking up. He's one noisy dude.

It's that time of the year folks. That glorious time when I start doing the sketch a day thing, proclaim that this time I will most definitely not crap out after a week, and then promise horrible self flagellation if I do.
Failure is only a matter of time (I have prepared special nunchucks to grievously injure myself with) but for now, REJOICE! FOR THERE ARE SKETCHES! STRAIGHT FROM THE SKETCH CARNIVAL. What is the sketch carnival you ask? Why, it is that linkie on the right. Right there. No, not that one. The one that says 'sketch carnival' on it. Sheesh.

There are sketches there. My sources assure me that soon, my comrades will rise from the grave and resume their sketching with their cold dead fingers. The glory of the sketch carnival will return, slightly dustier and smelling of mothballs, but still quite sketchy.

A building that may be boat-like if you squint, or are afflicted by the horrible disease known as boatitis. It's a terribly nautical affliction.

A lesson learned about the dangers of eating soup on your drawing desk. A delicious lesson.

The space police. You know that guy is cool because he has a tiny mohawk, a gun, and he is smoking inside his helmet (how he lit that cigarette is beyond me, but when you're that cool, things probably just catch fire on their own all the time).

Oh my.
Here's the visual test for the film I am working on right now.

This took way longer than it should have because I couldn't decide what the backgrounds should look like, and also because I hate perspective oh so much (and it's only one point here... There's a few two point shots that will probably end in blood). I'm also not sure how much detail I should be putting into these backgrounds. I'm aiming for 1080p and working at about twice that, and I don't know when I should stop detailing things way way in the background.
5till, it's pretty close to what I have in mind, although I might get rid of the fog if I can't figure out how to polish it up some more; it's kind of hard since it does unspeakable things to my computer every time I try to work on it.
The textures will probably be tweaked some as well, but they're getting there already. Some animation bits in these shots will probably also get some changes now that I've figured out some more stuff with TVpaint. That second shot goes horribly off model (hey, digital is tuff with a tablet), but I did some experiments with some cut out animation and a combination of both could work pretty well. I might post the (terribly overanimated) test later.
The light in the tunnel is kind of tricky because again, my computer dies whenever I try to work on it, and there's a few shots where I want it to be really far away so any detail that goes into it gets totally lost (it looks pretty cool when I push it to the front though, so that's nice).

I was working on these a while ago, then stopped, then forgot, then started again, then forgot again, and now they're just sort of sitting there and they may or may not be finished at some point.

This always happens. I start painting mechanical thingies with many legs, so I paint one leg, then realize I have to paint all the others and I go all hamlet and start getting existential with a skull. It's kind of hard to be existential with a skull when it's wearing a silly winter hat though.

I think I need to add 'lips' to the list of things I am terrible at. It's okay, I hear I got some purty lips myself, so maybe this is life's way of balancing these things. You can't have purty lips and be able to draw purty lips. That's a sure-fire way of opening rifts in the space-time continuum. Then again, I suspect sneezing too loudly may open rifts in the space-time continuum.
Not really all that sturdy, that space-time thing.

Here's a color test for something I'm working on.
I don't think it's going to change much from this. Maybe a bit more texture, but overall it's got the dull colors I was looking for. I'm not entirely sure whether or not to texture the light areas on the character - right now I'm leaning towards no.

After all this time. Four years since I started. Wait no, scratch that, five years. Holy crap. I am the world's slowest animator, or maybe it took that long pondering how to end this cinematic masterpiece. Actual production was a little less than two weeks I guess, but we can't discount all that ponderous pondering.

Volume might be a bit low, or maybe it will explode your ears. I have no way of knowing. If you don't hear humming in the beginning, it is too low. If your house explodes and everything you love is set on fire, it may be too high or the world's most unlikely coincidence.

I got caught up animating the dude and forgot I just wanted to test out the effects, and by the time I got to that point, my hand hurt and I was lazy, so uh, I have no idea what it's supposed to test now. Teeth maybe? Those came out nice. Except you can't see them because it's super low res. Rest assured, they are there, and they are wonderful. That's why everything else isn't, because I want you to focus on those beautiful beautiful teeth. That you can't see.

Also someone needs to explain to me how the hell TVpaint does resolutions, because I'm either really bad at math, or the proportions thingie is broken. Wait, I am really bad at math. Bloops.

The animation is a bit rubbish, but I just wanted to test out shading in tvpaint. It is interesting.

Eventually with non-rubbish animation it might be rather nice, but I feel that the rubbish animation market is booming these days, and I must get in on that rubbish animation action. Try saying rubbish three times fast. It's the most scottish you'll feel all day, mostly because if you're like me you'll just start making 'arsh' sounds and spitting everywhere, which is as close to being sean connery as you can get.

Onoes!It's a bit rough, but I wanted to try out rendering in TVpaint. It's pretty neat, although it takes a lot of getting used to. Also I screwed up the framerate because I hadn't noticed it reset itself to 30 halfway through but now I know, and knowing is half the battle. The other half is the part where there's blood and guts everywhere, which you'd think they would mention more often.

I got annoyed with this one after a while because I made it too small which made it a pain in the ass to detail with the brush I like (and switching brushes is IMPOSSIBLE. It's like terrorism, once you give in, THEY WIN. Those filthy brushes).

It's kind of hard to define shapes when you don't know what the shapes are. But goddamnit, I did it anyway (just don't look too close).

Comics update

So here is an update on what is happening with this comic, which may reduce the shouting (sadly I don't think this matters to that crazy man outside my window).
I am not currently horrendously late. Shocking, I know. Comics are still being made at an exponential rate. Soon I will reach the comic singularity and collapse all of creation (chances are we'll pop out of existence with one of those awesome sound effects from the 60's batman. Probably "Zlott").

But then, why are there no comics? THAT IS AN EXCELLENT QUESTION AND I AM VERY GLAD THAT YOU ASKED, SIR/MA'AM/SCHLORK.
I am currently engaging in dark magicks to get a nice spiffy website up and running, where you will be able to reliably find such comickery as may be produced by me. It will be much nicer than this here blog, and the blog can once again be about dinosaurs and random articles of clothing.
This should be completed soon (hopefully in the next month) and then I can go back to making you groan terribly with every page (coincidentally, we expect the first groan-powered engine to be completed around the same time).

I am doing these in between all the other crap I am doing right now. Still figuring out a schedule for MOAR PAGES, but I should be able to put up 2 or 3 a week while I still work on other stuff. Still coming up with an efficient workflow.
Also, fighting desk gremlins. They're like regular gremlins that take the ink out of all your pens and misplace your eraser ALL THE FREAKING TIME.

After drawing this tiny tiny drawing (it is so tiny, but through the magic of technology it appears LARGE), I realized I did not know much about our friend the pocket. Therefore, I have drawn pockets. Also things related to pockets. Yes my friends, the armored boot is a distant cousin of the pocket. Think about that the next time you put something in your pocket. I SAID THINK ABOUT IT.

Also my new scanner sucks. I have to resort to black magicks to fit things in there, and they still won't fit. Several farmyard animals were sacrificed needlessly. Damn you HP!

This is how it's going to work: there's going to be at least one thing posted per day. Of those things, there will be at least one sketch a day. There may be other things. Those things could be anything, but they will generally be things I made (bodily functions do not count, nor do illegitimate children. I am on the fence about legitimate ones).
Failure to post at least a sketch a day will result in horrible shame for my clan, followed by ritual disembowelling with a spoon. I have a specially prepared engraved silver spoon. It is exquisite. Who exactly gets ritually disembowelled will be determined at a later date.
A day is defined by the time I wake up to the time I go to bed which, these days, has nothing to do with whatever puny little clocks tell me - what do they know anyway. That means I could totally cheat by not sleeping for the next 364 days, but then I'd say I deserve my victory (and subsequent horrible death).
